Baco Cheese Twisters
Bakery Dog Treat Recipe

This bakery dog treat looks like it is from a gourmet bakery in NYC. Easy to make at home, these baco cheese twisters will make you look like a pro.

Baco Cheese Twisters gormet home made dog treats remind me of the penny pretzels that my brother and I used to buy at the candy store when we went to visit my grandparents in South Dakota when we were growing up.

Home made dog treats are fun to make!

It was great because you could help yourself to the treats that you wanted. Based on your budget for the day (Sometimes my brother and I even had 10 cents to spend.), you could choose quite a few cool items.

Some are long gone—I haven't seen those awful wax things that you tore off the end and then squeezed the sugar water into your mouth from--for years (a good thing).

The owner of that candy store knew our names and he also knew who we were visiting (It was always in the newspaper!).

The stick pretzels were actually a penny each. And they must have been a foot long—maybe just a tad shorter. But they certainly were good!

These bakery dog treats have the same appeal. They don't taste like a pretzel though. These gourmet dog treats have a lovely cheese smell and taste.

Remember—your dog has a stronger sense of smell than taste. You will notice that he will smell everything first—even before he gobbles it down.

Anyway, these dog bakery treats should be a hit with your dog and his friends.

If you make your bakery dog treat recipe with real bacon bits, make sure that you refrigerate them or freeze them. If you use the soy bacon bits, you can keep them at room temperature as long as you dry them properly.

Tumeric gives the twisters their lovely yellow color.

Ingredients for
Baco Cheese Dog Treats

Here it is...

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons bacon bits
  • 1 tablespoon dry milk
  • 1 tablespoon tumeric

Directions for
Baco Cheese Twisters

  • Place all the ingredients in your bread maker.

  • Set the bread maker for the dough cycle.

  • When the dough is ready, remove it and divide it into 3 portions.

  • Divide the dough into 24 pieces. You can vary the number of pieces, depending on how large you want the twisters to be.

  • Divide each ball or portion into 2 equal parts.

  • Roll each part into a long rope or stick.

  • Place the 2 sticks side by side, pinch the ends together.

  • Twist the 2 sticks and then place each twister carefully on a lightly greased baking sheet.

  • Bake the dog treats at 300 degrees F for about an hour. Check to make sure that they don't get too brown.

  • When they are done to your satisfaction, turn off the oven and let the dog treats continue to dry and harden for several hours or overnight.

This bakery dog treat recipe yields 24 twisters, more or less, depending on how large you want them to be.
