Dogs are more than just pets—they are trusted companions who are loyal to the very end. They tolerate teasing, neglect and even are good natured when we use them for obnoxious things like warming our feet! In return we owe them attention to their health care. It's the least we can do for them!
Dog Diseases
Many diseases and conditions in dogs can be prevented by routine canine health care, in conjunction with your veterinarian. Some conditions can be prevented by immunization while others require routine strategies for prevention. In the coming weeks, I'll be discussing canine health care for: - Dog parvovirus
- Neutering – Did you know that neutering a female dog can
prevent breast cancer?
- Diabetes in dogs
- Dog constipation
- Coprophagy – stool eating. Not a great topic for discussion, but very important if your dog has a problem with this!
- Dog cancer
- Arthritis in dogs
- Kennel cough
- Coronavirus
- Dog distemper
- Dog hepatitis
- Leptospirosis
- Rabies in dogs
- Canine Lyme disease
- Rocky Mountain spotted fever
- Dog hip dysplasia
- Dog anal glands problems
- Canine ringworm
Canine Health Care for Parasites
Unfortunately parasites don't just go away by themselves. When we discover them, some intervention is needed, or they will just get worse. Dog ticks and fleas are usually seasonal—although, if you live in the southern US, you may have a problem year-round!
Getting rid of a full-blown flea problem
can be tricky and will require a lot of patience on your part.

Other parasitic problems that you may have to deal with are: - Canine mange
- Dog Mites
- Dog worms
Did you know that there are a few diseases that humans can catch from their dogs? They are called zoonotic diseases, and I will be talking about some of them in the next few weeks, as well.
Prevention is Better than Reaction
Of course, preventing a problem is always better than dealing with one! As I talk about each of the conditions, I'll give you information on what is known in current medicine about preventing each condition or disease. In some cases, alternative medicine is available to help you. Often there is a simpler solution or a more gentle herbal medicine to protect or cure your pet's problem. And, of course, as I learn about products that may be helpful to you, I will share that information with you, as well.
Emergency Care for Dogs
This is the part of canine health care that we all fear the most! No one wants to get the call that says that their beloved pet was hit by a car or bitten by a sick wild animal. But, chances are that, at least some of you, will have to deal with an emergency.- Do you know what you should include in a dog first aid kit?
- What will you do if your dog has a seizure?
- Do you know how to move an injured dog?
- How do you know if your dog is suffering from heat exhaustion or a heat stroke? What do you do?
- What do you do for insect bites or stings?
- What should you do if your dog has been poisoned?
- How do you know that your dog has frostbite and what do you do for it?
If you have any doubt about what to do when your dog is suffering from one of these conditions, please check back from time to time as I place new information on my website. I'll let you know in my
Dog Blog
when I add a new canine health topic! By the way, if you were looking for a particular condition and didn't see it listed, please let me know. If it's at all possible, I'll try to include it in the coming weeks!
