If you are making your own dog treats to save money, cheese may not be the best choice for your homemade dog treat recipes. Cheese is one of the more expensive treats that dogs like. But you do get your money's worth when you feed your dog cheese. So before you totally discount the idea, consider the benefits of cheese. It is high in protein and high in calcium! Newer studies also indicate that cheese may actually re-mineralize your pet’s teeth and reduce the acids that cause plaque and lead to cavities! Cheese also helps to protect your aging pet from osteoporosis. Dogs enjoy just eating an occasional chunk of cheese, and they will devour a cheese dog biscuit or cheese dog cookie. Include cheese in your healthy dog treat ingredients pantry. You can add cheese for dogs to your homemade dog treats by grating fresh cheese, spreading the treat with a tablespoon of cream cheese or by using dried parmesan cheese in your dog treat recipe.
Try using
cheese powder
in your dog treat recipes if you want to get that "cheddar cheese" flavor. It's a nice easy way to increase the protein and enhance the flavor of your dog treats.
When Not to Give Your Dog Cheese
There is one exception to using cheese. If your dog is overweight, do not feed him cheese. It is one of those foods that can contribute to an existing dog weight problem. However, if your dog is healthy and within normal weight guidelines, you can feed her an occasional cheese treat.
