What makes a recipe good for kids?

Kid-friendly recipes should be simple
and have clear directions.

There are a number of things to keep in mind when first introducing children to baking:

  • Easy - the recipe should be easy. This is true whether your child is making brownies or homemade dog treats.

  • Few ingredients - Easy kids recipes should have only a limited number of ingredients. Children need to learn to check and double check whether they included all the ingredients in the recipe. This is so much easier for them if there are only a few ingredients.

  • Quickly done - Children have a short attention span, and fun recipes for kids are quickly completed.

  • Dramatic and impressive - Just like you, your child wants to be proud of his baked treats. Children recipes that look really cool when they are done will quickly become their favorites.

  • Appreciated - Children love to show off their work. Easy recipes for kids get compliments (or happy begging for more treats) are the best. It's much more fun when people (or dogs) beg for more!

But there are so many other ways to use kid friendly recipes:
  • Home schoolers - Making easy kids recipes can be a great learning experience. Consider all the aspects of a good recipe – reading, math, measuring, memory, telling time, setting a timer, following directions and communication.

  • Girl scouts or boy scouts - or other childrens groups. Try some kid friendly recipes with your children's social groups.

  • Halloween treats - Use fun recipes for kids to make Halloween treats for the neighborhood dogs.

  • Christmas gifts - Have the children participate in making gift dog treats for dogs in the family and for friends. Teaching children to give of themselves is a very valuable lesson. And making gifts teaches them to be thrifty, as well.

  • Dog parties - Having a dog birthday party or another kind of theme party can be great fun. Have the children help our by using easy kids recipes to help make dog treats for the guests.

Many of the dog treat recipes on the site are appropriate for use with beginning cooks.

Why not try some children recipes to get your children started baking?

Start your kids' cooking experience with easy dog treat recipes for kids and they will be instantly successful (with a loving, and very patient test-taster).
