Dog Bakery Equipment

Deciding on dog bakery equipment for your dog bakery business will depend on your plans for your bakery. If you are starting small, you can keep expenses down by buying used bakery equipment or by simply using the equipment that you already have.

Outfitting The Small Dog Bakery

Starting small can be very smart! So can staying small! If you will be baking your dog treats in your home, you can use the equipment that you already have.

You will save lots of money by buying used dog bakery equipment for your dog bakery. And that is important—the most common reason that small businesses fail is that they spend more money than necessary. You can greatly increase your chances for success by simply keeping your expenses down.

If you need to buy some items, try going to yard sales (tag sales in New England), flea markets, Craigs List, estate auctions, thrift stores or an online auction.

Basic Dog Bakery Equipment

Here are some items that you may need:
  • Oven – your stove's oven.

  • Mixer – I have a heavy duty Kitchen Aid mixer. I suggest that you get a heavy duty mixer if you don't have one. You will quickly destroy a hand held mixer by over-use if you try to use one.

  • Bread Machine – This makes life easier. I have a couple of bread machines and always had a couple of batches of dog treats going at once. If you're going to spend the time for one batch, it doesn't take much more time to make two!

  • Cookie Press – You won't need this if you don't make this kind of dog treat. Optional.

  • Cookie Cutters – Most dog treat bakery owners make dog bones, so, at the very least, you'll need dog bone cookie cutters. Your dog treats will be more interesting if you have some cute shapes.

  • Cookie Sheets or Baking Sheets – You will need several to make your baking operation efficient. If you don't have enough baking sheets, precious time will be wasted. Load your cookie sheets while the first batch is baking. It will be ready when the dog cookies in the oven are baked.

  • Pizza Cutter – If you are making dog biscuits, using a pizza cutter makes cutting the dog biscuits go quickly.

  • Decorating Bag – This often comes in a set, with different heads for decorating.

  • Double Boiler – use this to melt carob or yogurt coating. Or use your microwave.

  • Large cutting board or pastry board – to roll your dough on.

  • Rolling Pin – to roll the dough.

  • Food Safe Storage Containers – I used 2-3 gallon white “icing” buckets that I got from Giant, Food Lion and Wal-Mart stores (Ask in their bakery departments). They will often give them to you for free. If the rubber gasket is still in the lid, you can get a tight seal. You will need a special opener for the buckets.

Also, try asking restaurants for used glass or plastic gallon jars. A busy restaurant with a salad bar will often save them for you. Restaurants get salad dressing and condiments in gallon jars. You will have to wash both the jars and the buckets well when you get them home.

  • Cake Pans and Muffin Pans – You can get some great shapes – both big and little. Do you want to make dog birthday cakes? Try a bone shaped cake pan. Or little energy bars? Use a mini muffin pan or a mini loaf pan.

  • Miscellaneous – donut cutter, biscuit cutter, apple corer. Depending on the dog treats that you decide to make, you may or may not need these.

If you plan on having a physical retail shop, your expenses will be much greater. Not only do you have to plan on overhead expenses like rent, utilities, etc., you will also have to furnish your bake shop. Consider this very carefully before you decide to proceed in this direction.

You will need commercial refrigerators, bakery ovens and bakery display cases in addition to large storage containers. If you decide to have a retail store, you will also need commercial mixers and bakery equipment like large baking sheets, baking racks, shelves, etc. These items can be purchased from a bakery supply company.

Or, better yet, consider buying used dog bakery equipment to save money. Many retail shops and companies are going out of business. You may be able to find a bakery equipment auction in your area.

So, get the dog bakery equipment that you need. Don't skimp on this, because having the right tools and equipment will help you to be more efficient with your time – and help you to make more money.

Just don't waste money by buying more than you need. And, in the end, you will make more money if you spend less money. Profit is what is left—after expenses!
