Directions for Crusty Loaves Dog Bread
- Place all the ingredients in your bread maker.
- Set the bread maker for the dough cycle.
- Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
- When the dough is ready, remove it from the bread maker and divide it into 12 pieces—more or less, depending on how big you want to make the loaves.
- When you are dividing the dough into pieces, a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that the finished loaves will be approximately twice the size of the dough that you shape and place on the baking sheet.
- Shape each piece of dough into a small loaf or ball. To do this, gently tuck the “ends” under the loaf and then place the ball on the cookie sheet.
- The loaves should be placed 2-3” apart on the baking sheet, as they will get larger as they rise.
- Take a sharp knife and make several parallel cuts on the top of each loaf. When you do this, you should cut into the loaf about 1/4”.
- Make a second pass with the knife and make several parallel slits that are perpendicular to the first cuts. Check the photo to see what they will look like.
- Cover the loaves with a clean dish towel and let them rise for 1 hour in a warm location. The little loaves of dog bread will expand and get bigger. You will know that that the dough has "doubled", when you lightly push your finger into the dough and the hole or indentation remains. If the dough is not double yet, it will spring back up.
- Using a pastry brush, brush the tops of the loaves with a beaten egg.
- Bake the loaves for 1 hour in a 300 degree F oven.
- Turn off the oven and let the loaves continue to dry overnight in the oven.
Crusty Loaf Dog Chews should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer. Just like other fine homemade whole grain breads, they will get moldy in a few days if stored at room temperature. Enjoy this Crusty Loaf dog bakery treats recipe. You'll have fun with this one!
