History of St Patricks Day

Dog Treats for St Patricks Day

The origin of St Patricks Day was in Ireland. St Patrick, recognized by the Roman Catholic church as a saint, spent many years in Ireland working hard to convert the pagans to Christianity. He traveled across the country, establishing monasteries, schools and churches—often putting his own life in great peril.

Irish folklore includes a number of stories about St Patrick. Perhaps the most famous of these is that he gave a sermon on top of a hill and chased the snakes out of Ireland. The truth is that there never were any native snakes in Ireland. It seems that the story may have been symbolic for the conversion of the pagans.

St Patricks Day was first celebrated in America in 1737 in Boston, where there were many Irish living. Several hundred years later, we celebrate in America every year on March 17, the day that St Patrick died.

Here we have parades (the 2 most noteworthy are in New York City and in Savannah, Georgia), we participate in the “wearing of the green” everywhere from the workplace to the neighborhood school, and, of course there is a lot of drinking green beer! It’s a happy day, if no longer a religious day in most quarters.

Include Your Dog on St Patrick’s Day !

While you are getting ready for your big celebration this year, don’t forget to include your pet in the fun! A small article of green clothing will call people’s attention to her when you take her for a walk or when you arrive together at the party.

Speaking of parties, consider making special pet treats (using my dog cookie recipes) for St Patricks Day!

Color your pet treats green! You can use green food color. Or, if you prefer to keep your dog biscuits or cookies natural, you can use spinach powder to tint your dog treats green.

Or, alternatively, leave the dog cookies natural and coat them with green dog treat icing and/or sprinkles or colored sugar.

I have included some gourmet dog treats recipes and dog cookie recipes to help you with the menu!

You’ll have fun baking the St Patricks Day dog cookies and dog treats--and your pet will love to eat them!
