Dog Eye Problems

Dog eye problems may require emergency dog eye care or surgery. If you know what to look for, you can avoid or lessen many eye problems in dogs. Preserve your dog's vision by being on top of canine eye problems!

Eye problems in dogs can develop because of trauma (injury), congenital traits (heredity) or because of illness.

What's more, a relatively insignificant condition can develop rapidly into a major condition that may require emergency care or even surgery. Taking care of your dog's eye care needs is just part of good dog health care.

Even if you are giving your dog exquisite eye care, she can develop dog eye problems. She can develop canine eye problems at any age--as a puppy, or later as an older dog.

If you stop to think about it, it’s a wonder that more dogs don’t have trouble with their eyes. Dogs race along, often past twigs or other objects sticking up in the grass, and it is amazing that they don’t scratch or hurt their eyes more often.

And did you know that a dog that is hanging his head out a car window can have a foreign object fly into his eye? Or his eyes can become irritated by the force of the wind, dust, rain, etc.

That having been said, accidents DO happen, so we need to be aware.

You can get a lot of tips for dog care online. But...sometimes you just need to ask a veterinarian a question.

Save time, money and the hassle of a trip to the vet's. Get affordable expert advice, for non-emergencies, from a pet doctor online.

Symptoms of Eye Problems in Dogs

Do you know what to look for when you look at your pet's eyes? When you handle your dog and take care of her, be alert for signs that your dog’s eyes are irritated or sore:

  • rubbing or pawing her eyes because they are itchy or sore
  • redness
  • tearing or liquid coming from her eyes
  • pus from the eyes
  • cloudiness of the eyes
  • bumping into things or missing steps
  • excessive blinking or keeping eye either open or shut all the time

If you see these symptoms (and they don't go away quickly) or any others that you think may indicate a dog eye problem, take your dog to your veterinarian or check with a pet doctor online , as your dog may have a condition that will need to be addressed:

For more information on specific conditions go to dog glaucoma, canine cataracts, or canine conjunctivitis. These conditions are often seen in old dogs , but your dog doesn't have to be elderly to have them appear.

If you are alert and handle any eye abnormalities quickly, you can usually prevent further damage to, or blindness from dog eye problems. Just a few moments a day can save months of agony later--for both you and your dog!
