Try my easy dog treats recipes and keep training time healthy and fun!Training your new puppy can be a daunting task if you don't quite know how to do it. I’ve gathered a few easy tips to help you get started. This is the short and sweet version. If you would like to have more details on specific training sessions, I will be adding new articles from time to time. Just remember--if you approach puppy training right, it will be fun for both you and your puppy! Here are some points to keep in mind when using training treats to train your new pup: Training Treats Training treats are used for exactly what the name implies--for training your puppy to be obedient and also to do tricks (just for fun).Keep Sessions Short When you are just getting started, you should work on behaviors that are easy for your dog and for very short periods of time. Puppies have very short attention spans and they will cooperate as long as possible, but they will become distracted in a short time. Keep training sessions to 10 minutes or less when your puppy is less than 6 months. Gradually you can start to make the sessions longer--up to 1/2 hour. Reward Enthusiastically When your puppy is first learning a new command, reward him every time he does things right. Even if the behavior is correct for a fleeting moment! For example, if you are asking him to "sit" and he sits for a split second, then gets up, praise him (fast!) while he's sitting to reinforce the positive behavior. Identify the behavior that you are working toward, and be consistent when you use praise. Say something like "Good sit" and say it every time you see your puppy sitting! Be patient He'll do it right more often and for longer periods if the behavior is praised and if he gets a reward for doing it right.Substitute Treats for Praise After your puppy learns a new behavior, you can start to use only praise and petting at times. Gradually wean your puppy from the treats so that she understands that she is performing the behavior to get your praise--not just treats. Natural Pet Bakery has created a nice line of dog training treats that are low in calories and high in nutrition--so that you won't have to worry about over-feeding your puppy while he's in training. They can be used safely with older dogs and overweight dogs as well! Of course I’m going to share my recipes with you. Here are some to help you get started…
