May 5, People Sickened by Dog Food Salmonella

Fourteen people (but no dogs) have become ill from salmonella that presumably came from contaminated dog food. The dog food was processed in a South Carolina plant and a recall was issued yesterday. The brands affected include: Canidae, Natural Balance, Apex, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Kirkland, Country Value, Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Premium Edge, Professional, 4Health and Taste of the Wild. You may be wondering how people (who didn’t eat the dog food) could get salmonella from the contaminated food. Unfortunately you can get salmonella by handling the dog food and then not washing your hands before eating or handling your own food. People who became ill were in these states: North Carolina, Missouri, Ohio, Alabama, Connecticut, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Since the company has had numerous recalls since December 2011, you might want to check to see if you have any dog food that might have been made between December 2011 and May 2012.
