The Tuttle Animal Medical Clinic has seen 6 dogs die of an unknown diseasewith hemorrhagic diarrhea and vomiting accompanied by high fevers (as high as 107 degrees F, 40 degrees C). Dr Steve Koch, owner of the clinic, reported that the dogs had little in common, with the exception of coming from the same area of Sarasota County in Florida. Some had multiple vaccinations, others none. The dogs developed bloody diarrhea and vomitingalmost pure blood. All tests have proven to be negative, but the investigation to determine the cause of the dogs deaths is continuing.

A number of cases of the highly contagious dog flu have appeared in northern Virginia. The Fairfax County Animal Shelter has been closed, and 26 dogs are currently in quarantine for the dreaded H3N8 virus. Dog owners in the Washington D.C., Virginia and Maryland areas should stay alert for symptoms that might mean that their dog has been exposed and is becoming ill. The virus, presents with flu like symptoms, including; fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness, nasal discharge, and thirst. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms, and you live in the areas mentioned, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

Snail bait, with its toxic ingredient, metaldehyde, is highly toxic to dogs. The bait comes in little pellets, which resemble dog food. And it is flavored, making it even more appealing to our furry friends! Commonly used in gardens to deter the activity of snails, it is sometimes used less innocently to rid the neighborhood of roaming animals. At any rate, if you suspect that your dog has eaten even a small amount of snail bait (less than a teaspoon is toxic to a 10 pound dog), it is an emergency. Your dog should see a veterinarian ASAP.

Dog flu, normally a fairly mild disease in canines, has shown up in Philadelphia in a more severe and deadly form. Six dogs, in two dog shelters have died, and four were euthanized. Both dog shelters have been closed and quarantined, for an indefinite amount of time. Spokesmen for the shelters are concerned because dog flu is easily spread from dog to dog by close contact or even by toys or objects that a sick dog has touched. The symptoms most commonly seen are a cough (hacking cough) and a really runny nose and eyes. Dog flu is often confused with kennel cough because of the cough. If your dog has dog flu, he may also have a fever. Dog flu has no relationship to swine flu or bird flu. If your dog develops the above symptoms (especially quickly), make sure you take her to the veterinarian.

With cancer in dogs on the increase, it is refreshing to know that the first drug, specifically for the treatment of dog cancer was just introduced to the market. Yesterday, the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) approved the drug Palladia (toceranib phosphate). Palladia has proven to shrink cutaneous mast cell tumors, responsible for 20 of skin tumors seen in dogs. Skin cancers are the most common cancers seen in dogs with cancer. Mast-cell tumors are the second most common form of cancer in dogs. Until now, veterinarians have been using chemotherapy designed for humans, because there were no drugs manufactured specifically for dogs. The new drug, Palladia, is very promising, as 60 of the dogs treated in trials had their tumors shrink. Earlier this month, George Fennell, VP of Pfizer Animal Health's Companion Animal Division, spoke to veterinarians at the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum. He told the vets that Palladia will be available sometime early in 2010. However, if your dog has this type of cancer, your vet may be able to refer him to a specialist who has access to Palladia, now.
