Will Your Party Include Your Dog?

Have you been considering dog party treats for your Super Bowl party, your football tailgate party or your son's first birthday party?

Keep your pet safe and happy with this common sense advice and our recipes for easy homemade dog treats!

You have everything for your Super Bowl Party. The paper plates, silverware, decorations, pom poms. You’ve sent the invitations. You’ve decided which finger foods and snacks you’ll be serving.

But…there’s one thing you forgot! Your favorite pet friends. What will you be serving for Casey and Brit?

Planning special snacks for your pet family is not so silly. In fact, it’s important that you remember them—for their safety! When the gang gets together and halftime arrives, the food comes out. That’s great—but it’s not always great for your dog!

Inevitably someone will walk away from a plate of finger foods or buffalo wings and your pet will move in and help himself!

Chicken bones can be disaster to a pet’s intestines. Or a plate of chips and dip can give him a huge tummy ache! If you think ahead and provide some special treats (made from our dog treats recipes) for your dog—pet treats that are safe and good for him—you’ll have a much better chance of making sure that everyone, including your dog, has a great time!

So, if you’re planning a big party for any occasion, whether it's Super Bowl Sunday or your child's first birthday, here are a few tips to keep in mind to make sure that your pet has a fun filled day too…

Keep track of your pet
as guests come and go

Greeting so many guests in one day can be a major stressor for your dog. Even if your dog knows most of the guests, he’s not used to greeting so many at a time.

Guests at Super Bowl parties or football parties tend to be loud and noisy, even when arriving. This can confuse your dog and he might show protective behavior, such as barking, growling or jumping up on guests.

If your dog likes to run out the front door when guests arrive, make sure that he isn’t in the same room as arriving guests. You might consider keeping him in a quiet room such as a bedroom until the guests have arrived and they are sitting down.

When things have calmed down a bit, you might let your dog say hello to the guests, with your supervision. Make sure that you have an ID tag for your pet, just in case someone accidentally lets him out.

Make sure that your pet doesn’t
have access to “people food”!

You need to protect your pet from foods toxic to dogs! Well meaning guests may share their snacks with your pet. Ask your guests to refrain from giving her any people food.

Instead, supply a limited number of appropriate dog party treats (made from our dog treats recipes) like football dog party treats or Pupperoni Pizzas that guests may feed her. They will enjoy the interaction, and your dog will be safer if she doesn’t eat inappropriate foods that may hurt her!

Pets just aren’t able to digest people food easily, and some people foods are actually dangerous to pets! So choose your dog treats recipes carefully!

Chocolate is especially toxic to dogs and tomatoes to cats. Neither should have onions or garlic. So that eliminates much of the "people food" that you will be serving.

Even if you and your guests are very careful, a sneaky pet can still find foods that can hurt him.

Make sure that food is not left unattended in the party area. Don’t allow guests to put alcoholic beverages on the floor (as dogs should not drink them).

And, last but not least, make sure that the garbage is not readily available for snacking.

Have a Plan B for your Pet

If things just don’t work out and your pet is over-stimulated or upset by all the excitement, have a place for him to go where he will be able to relax and recover.

Make sure he has dog food, a few dog party treats, water and a comfortable place to sleep. His retreat should be far enough away from the crowd that it is quiet and restful.

In the end, even though he will miss part of the party, you all will be happier for having planned ahead! And you will enjoy the game knowing that she is safe!
