Use Fish Oil for Dogs in Homemade Treats

Fish and fish oil for dogs are common dog treat and dog food ingredients. By adding only a tablespoon or two to your homemade dog treats, you can make sure your dog is getting enough omega 3 fatty acids.

Fish Oil for Dogs

Just as oil from fish is good for you, fish oil for dogs is also an excellent protein source and a healthy ingredient of food for your pets. Substitute a teaspoon to a tablespoon of fish oil for vegetable oil in your health dog treats.

Fish oil is very high in omega 3 fatty acids, which can help reduce the inflammation that an allergic dog often has. Using fish oil is a wonderful way to keeping your pet’s heart healthy and his cholesterol low! Veterinarians often recommend that you supplement your dog's diet with some omega 3 rich fish products.

Danger of Getting Omega 3
from Raw Fish

While cooked fish or fish oil are good for your dog, raw fish is potentially dangerous. Here's why...Your dog may become infected by flukes, a parasite which is carried by raw fish.

Flukes are small 1/4” long parasites that attach to a dog's liver and lungs. They can carry a disease known as “salmon poisoning”, which causes severe illness and bloody diarrhea. Treatment is not easy, nor is it usually effective.

Salmon poisoning usually comes from salmon or trout, and it is found in fish in the northwestern US.

To avoid this problem, simply cook or freeze fish before feeding them to your dog.
