Puppy Pizzas
Gourmet Dog Treat Recipe

Check out our Gourmet Treat Guide.

Need a gourmet dog treat for a dog party or special occasion?

Try this homemade dog treats recipe for dog pizza.

Made with natural ingredients that dogs love, it is sure to be a hit with your pet!

The crust is colored with beet powder to give it a pinkish tone. The yogurt coating is colored yellow with tumeric to look like cheese; the topping is bacon bits.

Serve these pizza gourmet dog treats for your next party.

Natural healthy dog treat ingredients make them good for your dog--as well as temptingly attractive! Help your dog to be part of the party!

Use your imagination to combine icing colors and
healthy toppings that look like a real pizza.

Puppy Pizzas are very popular with the canine crew. Not only do they look good, but they also must smell and taste good, too--based on the reaction that they get! And that reaction is partly due to the wonderful smell and taste of Anise Seed

Being a gourmet dog treat, this dog pizza homemade dog treat recipe has a small amount of sugar. If you only make them occasionally, that's not too bad. Fortunately dogs are not as sensitive (nor are their teeth) to sugar as we are.

However, if you are a natural foods purist, you can just leave the sugar out of the recipe.

Most dogs will still enjoy the pizzas and won't know that the sugar is missing! Try it that way and see how it goes!

Cookie Cutters for Pizza Homemade Dog Treats

Depending on whether you have a small dog or a large dog, you can vary the size of the pizzas. A nice size for almost all dogs is 1 1/2” to 2” in diameter.

I have a 2” circle cookie cutter that I use for these dog treats. If you don't have one, you can just use a plastic (or glass) drinking glass with a fairly sharp edge.

Dip the edge of the glass or cookie cutter in a bowl of flour in between cuts so that the dough doesn't stick to it. Doing this will make your life a lot easier!

Ingredients for Puppy Pizzas
Gourmet Dog Treat

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons wheat bran
  • 2 tablespoons organic soy flour
  • 2 tablespoons Beet Powder or 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 2 tablespoons raw sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Anise Seed

Topping

Directions for Puppy Pizzas
Homemade Dog Treats

  • Put all the ingredients (except the icing) into your bread maker in the order suggested by the manufacturer.

  • Set the bread maker for the dough cycle.

  • When the dough is ready, remove it and divide it into 3 or 4 equal balls.

  • Roll each ball into a sheet that is about 1/4” thick.

  • Using a circle cookie cutter or a drinking glass, cut your circles and place them on a lightly greased baking sheet.

  • Cover the pizza crusts with a clean dish towel and let them rise in a warm place, away from drafts, for an hour.

  • Bake the pizza crusts for 45-60 minutes at 300 degrees F. Check them after 30 minutes to make sure that they don't get too dark.

  • Turn off the oven and let the pizza crusts finish drying in the oven overnight. They will be dry and crisp when they are completely dry.

  • If you make the icing yourself, you can color it yellow (like cheese) with tumeric. Add a little at a time until you get the color that you want.

  • Sprinkle soy bacon bits on top for the pizza topping. If you prefer, you can use real bacon bits instead.

Pets and Tomatoes

At times, I have made Puppy Pizzas gourmet dog treats using tomato paste for the sauce and real mozzarella cheese for the cheese.

If you do this, make sure that you refrigerate or freeze the pizzas, as they will start to get moldy in a few days if stored at room temperature. This is true for many gourmet dog treats that do not have preservatives!

One additional reminder. Never, ever give tomato products to a cat or kitten! While tomatoes are just fine for a dog, they can be deadly for a cat.

This gourmet dog treat recipe for Puppy Pizzas takes a little more time than most of my recipes, but the little pizzas end up being so cute that I think you will find them to be worth the effort.

Have fun with the recipe...
