A Healthy Dog Diet Includes Milk

A healthy dog diet includes a reasonable quantity of milk, according to some dog nutritional experts. But there is a controversy surrounding the use of milk for dogs. Here are some points to consider...

Proponents of milk believe that milk provides big benefits for your pet’s bones! It’s a great source of calcium, protein and many vitamins--B vitamins (anti-stress vitamins), vitamin A (for sharp eyesight) and potassium.

Milk can also provide the benefit of protecting your dog from osteoporosis and colon cancer.

The easiest way to add milk to your other healthy dog treat ingredients is to add up to 1/4 cup of dry milk to your recipe. This won't change the texture of your dough and you won't have to adjust the ingredients, like you would if you added more liquid.

When to Avoid using Milk for Dogs

There are a few situations where milk for dogs should be avoided. If you find that it causes diarrhea in your dog, if your dog has digestive problems or it he develops skin symptoms after drinking milk, you should stop giving it to him.

The other situation where milk should not be included in a healthy dog diet is when the dog is obese or overweight. In this case you should truly be counting the calories that your dog gets every day. ALL the calories!

Can a Dog Get Too Much Calcium?

The answer to this question is “yes”. You should never give your dog calcium supplements—unless your veterinarian has prescribed them. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus is critical to your dog's health and bone development.

If your dog gets too much calcium, he won't be able to assimilate copper, zinc and other important minerals. This can actually result in bone deformities.

Lastly, giving extra calcium to large breed dogs, many of whom have hip or joint problems, can aggravate such conditions. Be especially careful with growing puppies.

So, giving milk to dogs is healthy. But make sure that you do so in moderation!
