Apricots are a great way to get beta carotene, or the plant form of vitamin A, which studies indicate may have cancer protective qualities. They’re also very low in calories, only 20 calories per dried apricot. So your dog can enjoy the wonderful taste of apricots, without concern for gaining weight!
Benefits of Apricots
Dried apricots (the kind that I use in my dog treat recipes) have a high fiber to volume ratio. Because of this, they can be used to relieve constipation. Only 2 or 3 dried apricots can make a huge difference.Another one of the benefits of fruit, apricots have a very high level of carotenoids. Carotenoids are antioxidants that help to prevent such conditions as heart disease and cancer (not proven yet). Carotenoids also help to reduce LDL (or the “bad” cholesterol) levels. We chose apricots for some of our homemade dog treats recipes and dog pastries because they are nutritious, in addition to adding a delightful flavor.
