Looking for home made dog treats? Dozens of easy homemade dog treats recipes for homemade dog biscuits, homemade dog cookies, homemade dog bones and more. Homemade dog treats-taste tested and vet approved!

Ready to make home made dog treats for your favorite dog? Not sure how?

Well, making home made treats can be a lot of fun. Homemade dog treats can add nutrition to a healthy dog diet—and the loving response from your pup or dog will be awesome!

Home made Dog Treats

Making homemade dog treats is fun and easy!

There are as many different ways to make healthy dog treats as there are different ways to make cookies. You can make “drop cookies”, “bar cookies”, “biscuits”, “cookie cutter cookies” and even treats in the shape of special baking pans for your dog.

I’ve included recipes for dog treats that are made in each of the ways I’ve mentioned above. And I’ll walk you through the directions, so that you will look like a pro!

Look in each section on the left for the recipes. You will find specific recipes for each theme—like “hypoallergenic”, “dog care”, “fat dog”, etc.

Some homeade dog treats take a little extra time to make (and sometimes decorate). Others are quick and easy. Some can be mixed and baked within an hour.

You need to decide how much time you will devote to the home made dog treats activity and how involved you want the process to be.

I’ll do my best to show you how to make dog treats in the simplest way possible. I love to bake—but I also love to make things easy!

Your Dog and New Dog Treats

Dogs experience their food differently from us. Taste is not the main event for them. Smell is!

Watch how your dog reacts when you give him a new kind of treat or food. He will spend time sniffing it. He’s getting a good idea of what it is.

He might also "play" with it for awhile—just to see how it acts when he moves it around. He might lick it or lick the coating or icing off the treat.

Dogs explore the world with their tongues and teeth. How soft is this new thing? What is it like when I lick or bite it?

The last thing your dog will do is eat the new treat. At this point he may gulp it down, or he may bite it into small pieces and then eat it quickly.

He will guard his new treat against “invaders” and will probably eat every last crumb. If your dog doesn’t eat the whole treat, he is telling you that this wasn’t one of his favorites.

Dog Treats Flavors

Think of making home made dog treats as an adventure with your dog. Try different flavors. If you make a single batch of treats each time, you can try a new flavor each time.

Watch your dog’s reaction carefully. Does she seem to like this one? Does she get excited when she sees you near the “treat jar” or “treat cupboard”? Does she eat this flavor treat quickly or just let it sit?

The experiment will be fun for both of you. Eventually, you will learn which homemade treats and flavors are her favorites!

Dog Treat Sizes

If you have a large breed dog, you can give your dog larger treats—and more of them. But, if you have a small breed dog, an overweight dog or a puppy, you will need to be more careful about the size of the pet treats that you make.

Small dogs aren’t physically able to eat over-sized treats. Also, a large treat or too many treats may give them an unbalanced diet because the treats are replacing their dog food.

The other reason smaller treats are best for little dogs (and obese dogs) is that you can regulate the number of calories that your pet is getting in his treats—a lot more easily.

Fortunately, I’ve included recipes for home made dog treats that range in size from very small to very big. There is something for everyone. Browse through the dog treats recipes in each section, and choose the ones that you think will appeal to your dog!

Why Bake Your Own
Homemade Dog Treats?

I don’t want to dwell on negative thoughts, but, as you know, we all had a wake-up call last year when so many dog foods were recalled. Even from companies that we trusted!
  • When you make your own homemade dog treats, you can use different recipes to give your dog a variety of treats .

  • You know the quality of the ingredients, the freshness, and how they were handled. You can use organic ingredients, or you can substitute one ingredient for another if you know that your pet is sensitive.

  • You can make sure that the homemade dog treats that you make--don't contain any foods toxic to dogs!

  • You control which ingredients will be used in your healthy dog treat recipes.

  • You can choose to make specialty treats just for your dog—like hypoallergenic treats, treats for a diabetic dog, puppy treats, treats for a fat dog, or treats to get rid of dog breath or an upset stomach.

The possibilities are endless. Every treat you make can be created with your pet in mind!

  • Making your own home made dog treats saves money! The cost to make a batch of cookies or biscuits is unbelievably low! And, as you know, with rising gas prices and rising food prices, the cost of buying dog treats keeps going up!

  • Baking is fun! Get the kids involved. Let them cut out shapes and decorate cookies. Trust me, your dog doesn’t care how pretty they look! And the children will love it!

  • I saved the best for last! Your dog will come to understand when his home made dog treats are in the oven.

Our dog, Skipper, smells them! She has learned to situate herself close to the stove when her “cookies” are baking.

There is always a biscuit or cookie available for the dog that is closest to the oven when the homemade dog treats are done!
