Gourmet Dog Treats

If you were in Scotland, you would probably have Scottish tea scones at afternoon tea time. It's a tradition that goes way back, and scones are usually served with butter and fruit jam.

Scones are often served with flair. You might see them in a small basket lined with a decorative cloth napkin. The best scones, of course, are light and tender.

Our Natural Pet Bakery version of the scones homemade dog biscuit was developed with dogs in mind. We've added whole grains and chicken bouillon to make the scones dog biscuit recipes more appealing to the canine crowd.

You can make these dog biscuits in any size that you would like—that will largely depend on the size dog that you have.

For small or medium sized dogs, I recommend smaller biscuits. You may have to adjust the baking time for larger or smaller dog biscuits.

Ingredients for Scones
Homemade Dog Biscuits

Here's the recipe:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup unbleached white flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons wheat bran
  • 2 tablespoons soy flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons dried sage
  • 3 teaspoons dry chicken bouillon

Directions for
Scones Dog Biscuits

  • Place everything in your bread maker.

  • Set the bread maker for the dough cycle.

  • When the dough is ready, remove it and divide it into 4 equal portions.

  • Roll each dough ball into a long skinny rectangle—about 2” x 10”. Depending on the size scone that you are making, you will have to adjust the amount of dough that you use and the size rectangle. It should be about 1/4” thick.

  • Cut little triangles, using a knife or pizza cutter, from the dough and place them on a lightly greased cookie sheet. The triangles should not touch each other, because they will get bigger as they rise.

  • Let the biscuits rise for about an hour or until they are doubled. When they are doubled, you can press a little finger imprint in the top of one of them and it won't spring back.

  • Just before you put the dog biscuit scones in the oven, brush them lightly on top with a little beaten egg. This will give them a lovely shiny top when they are done. If you don't care about their being shiny, just skip this step.

  • Bake the scones for about an hour at 300 degrees F. Check to make sure that they don't get too dark.

  • When they a nice golden brown, turn off the oven.

  • Let the Scottish scones dog biscuits continue to dry overnight in the oven. When completely dry, they should be hard and crisp.

If the scones dog bread biscuits are not totally hard (and you may choose to make them this way for your dog), you will have to store them in the refrigerator or freezer.

Enjoy making this homemade dog biscuit Scones recipe!
