Oats have been used for centuries in livestock feeds, and hearty oatmeal has been a staple in many countries for humans. Here in the US, it is a common breakfast food. Oats grow as a grass. To get oat bran, the oatmeal, or oats are separated from the husks and the oat bran is then ground. Oats contain healthy amounts of fiber, selenium (which fights cancer), B vitamins and iron. You can substitute this flour or rolled oats freely for other types of flour in dog treats recipes. When you substitute oats, oat bran, or flour for another flour, it should be substituted, cup for cup. Oats and its various forms go nicely with applesauce and cinnamon.
