Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe
Double Peanut Butter Tarts

Homemade Dog Treats

Check out our Peanut Butter Treat Guide

Try this peanut butter dog treat recipe for your favorite dog. Yummy gourmet dog treats that have peanut butter in the crust, and a dollup of peanut butter inside, these bakery dog treats will surely be a hit with your dog!

Peanut Butter Dog Treat

Satisfying even the most particular of peanut butter lovers, these dog bakery treats also have yummy White Yogurt Coating on top! Your dog will think he died and went to heaven.

This dog treat recipe takes a little more time than some of the others because it has several steps, and it also makes fewer treats than a recipe for biscuits or training treats. But I think you will find it well worth your time.

Consider making these peanut butter dog treats for your next dog birthday party.

You can serve them to the pet guests and know that they are not harmful. The pet parents will certainly appreciate your thoughtfulness. And the dogs will love these delicious dog treat tarts!

Anyway, for a few extra minutes of your time, you will have some wonderful dog treats that look like you just brought them home from a “people” bakery!

And I'm told that they taste great, as well! Here's the recipe:

Ingredients for Double Peanut Butter Tarts
Peanut Butter Dog Treat

Crust:
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons wheat germ
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white flour

Filling:

  • 1/3 cup peanut butter

Directions for Double Peanut Butter Tarts

  • Place all the ingredients for the crust in your bread maker and set the machine for the dough cycle.

  • When the dough is done, remove it and divide it into 3 equal portions to make it easier to handle.

  • Roll each portion into a sheet that is 1/4” thick, using a rolling pin on a floured cutting board.

  • Cut the dough into circles. I use a biscuit cutter that is 2” across. You can vary the size of the tarts by making larger or smaller circles.

  • Place ½ of the circles on a lightly greased baking sheet. Spoon ½-1 teaspoon of peanut butter onto the center of the circles on the baking sheet. The amount of peanut butter that you use will depend on the size of the circles that you make. I know there is a temptation to be generous with the peanut butter, but you don't want to have so much inside the tarts that it oozes out when it bakes, so be a little careful here...

  • Place the remaining circles on top of the bottom crusts that are on the baking sheet.

  • Take a fork and press lightly all around the edges of the tart. This will give you a nice edging that looks like a homemade pie crust or tart. Dip the fork in a glass of water frequently as you do this so it doesn't stick to the dough.

  • Bake the peanut butter dog treat tarts at 300 degrees F for an hour. When done, they will be a nice golden brown.

  • Turn off the oven and let the dog treats finish drying in the oven overnight.

  • When the peanut butter dog treat tarts are ready, melt the yogurt coating in a double boiler or microwave oven.

  • Using a flat edged knife, spread each tart with yogurt. You will need to complete this step fairly quickly, as the yogurt has a tendency to harden fairly fast.

  • Sprinkle the top with colored sprinkles or colored sugar. Vary the colors for the various holiday—red, white and blue for Independence Day, red and green for Christmas, red for Valentine's Day, orange and black for Halloween, pastels for Easter or multi-colors for birthdays.

Peanut Butter Dog Treat Storage

Double Peanut Butter Tarts should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer because they have more moisture than a dog biscuit or dog bone.

Making homemade treats is a great way to make sure that your dog is getting good healthy food, even with his treats. But, remember, they don't have preservatives, so you'll have to be a bit more careful when you store them!

There you are. You have a delightful gourmet peanut butter dog treat that will be quite impressive to serve (or take as a gift) at your next pet party.

Enjoy...
