Importance of Basic Dog Obedience Training

Training your dog is beneficial for both you and your dog. If you train your dog properly, you will eventually have a healthy and happy dog who behaves properly in various situations.

A well trained dog will have good manners and will obey your commands cheerfully. Using dog games can develop your dog’s stamina and muscle strength, in addition to making your dog’s learning fun!

An untrained dog can develop bad habits. Your dog needs to understand what is allowed—and what is not.

Puppy Training Games
as Part of Dog Obedience Puppy Training

  • Hide and Seek - Play hide and seek to practice the basic commands of “sit” and “stay”.You can either be the one who hides or you can use toys or dog treats as the hidden objects that the both of you will find.
  • Game of Fetch - This dog game works well both indoors and outdoors. You can start inside your home while your dog is still a puppy. Use balls or dog toys as things to fetch. If your dog successfully retrieves the toy, give him dog training treats for a job well done. When he grows older, a Frisbee is the best bud for the both of you.

  • Tug of War - This game will develop your dog’s physical strength and self discipline as well. Use a blanket or a particular toy to be used as your tug rope. Remember to use only one specific thing. Otherwise you might find your dog playing with your curtains or a favorite pillow on the sofa. If your dog becomes too excited, end the game and resume it when he calms down.

  • The Come Game - This game requires at least two to three persons. Sit on the floor within your dog’s level (dogs love it when you go down to their level. It makes them feel important.) Sit on one side while the other person sits on the other side. Hide dog toys or dog treats behind your backs and show your dog the toy or treat one at a time. When he comes to you, hide the toy again. Your friend will call him and do the same. Do this until your dog masters the basic command of coming.

Puppy training games are important when training your dog. They make learning an enjoyable thing to do. And your dog will look forward to your dog training sessions. Training games can help your dog enjoy learning and will also strengthen the bond between you and your dog!
