Rye Flour for Dog Treats

Try some rye flour or rye in your homemade dog treat recipes. Very low in gluten, but high in nutrition, rye is often used in hypoallergenic dog treats and dog food. And dogs love it!

Rye, unlike some of the ancient grains and flours, only appeared on the scene in Europe during the Middle Ages. Rye quickly became a staple, and bread made from rye, was almost the whole “meal” in many European countries.

Rye actually contains more protein, phosphorus, iron, potassium and B vitamins than whole wheat. It comes in various forms: rye flour, whole grain rye (or groats), rye grits, rye meal (ground so that it resembles cornmeal), rye flakes or rolled rye (looks almost like oatmeal).
