Top 10 Childrens Books About Dogs
Looking for the top 10 childrens books about dogs? Dogs and kids just naturally go together and dog books are a great way to teach children about dog care, dog training and dog health. Having been a third grade teacher and the mother of five, I've been interested in childrens books for a long time. Here are my picks for the top 10 childrens books about dogs:
Dog Heaven by Cynthia Rylant - Just as the title indicates, this children's book is about heaven for dogs. While it was written for children, this book is truly ageless and has a way of comforting people of any age who have lost a dog. For anyone who has lost a dog, this childrens book has a way of making it better. Ms. Rylant is also a Newbery winner for children's books—a tribute to her skills.
Walter el perro pedorrero: Walter the Farting Dog by William Kotzwinkle, Glenn Murray, and Audrey Colman - This one will make everyone laugh. Walter, rescued from the pound, has a gas problem. No matter what the family tries, Walter's canine flatulence just doesn't go away. But, as you'll see if you read this book, Walter's problem turns into an asset, when he uses his natural gas to chase 2 burglars away. This one is strictly for fun, and it will soon become one of your child's favorite top 10 childrens books. This version is in Spanish--great for those learning Spanish and those who speak it!
Dog by Matthew Van Fleet – This is a cute interactive book for little ones that has various textures to touch. Adorable pictures and fun, rhyming text. This is one of those books that engages everyone—adults included! (baby-preschool)
A Dog's Life: Autobiography of a Stray by Anne M. Martin – This is the moving story of Squirrel, a stray dog and her adventures from losing her mother, to searching for food and, finally, finding a home where she will be safe and happy. A tear-jerker at times, and a book that will be reread over and over—and never forgotten! (ages 9-12)
Good Dog, Carl by Alexandra Day – This is a delightful fantasy book in which Carl, a rottweiler, is put in charge of taking care of the baby. As soon as Mom leaves, the two go into action—doing everything they shouldn't! Kids love the fun and the comradery of the two... (ages 4-8)
Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion – Harry is a white dog with black spots who loves everything—but taking a bath! He does everything to avoid taking a bath and keeps getting dirtier until finally, his family doesn't recognize him. Then he BEGS to take a bath. Great fun for kids who may not love taking baths! (ages 3-8)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days by Jeff Kinney - It’s summer vacation, the weather’s great, and all the kids are having fun outside. So where’s Greg Heffley? Inside his house, playing video games with the shades drawn. It seems Jeff's mom has a different idea of how the summer will go. Who will win?
Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman – This is actually a fine example of children's literature—with great pictures, to boot! Lots of dogs of all shapes and sizes and a budding romance between two of the main characters. This is a fine beginning reader book and will be a favorite with younger children! (ages 4-8)
Those are my choices for the top 10 childrens books about dogs. Many are educational, in addition to being great fun. When children are taught to learn in a fun way, reading and learning become a lifetime activity for them. And that is definitely worth the extra effort of finding good books for your children and grandchildren!
