Apples in Wellness Dog Treats
Make sure you include apples in your wellness dog treats. Remember the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"? Well, it is not just an old wives tale. Give your dog the benefits of fruit with apple dog treats.Just one apple contains as much fiber as 2 slices of whole wheat bread—about 4.3 grams of dietary fiber! When you are making wellness dog treats, you can add apples to your dog treats recipies in a couple of ways. Try chopping fresh apples into little chunks or simply use applesauce--which is a whole lot easier.

What are the Benefits of Fruit?
The American Pharmaceutical Association recognizes apples as being a healing food. And folk healers all the way back to ancient India and Egypt used apples to encourage good digestion. In modern times, we recognize apples for their ability to aid digestion, prevent and control constipation, get rid of diarrhea, clean the teeth, lower fevers and help with such conditions as rheumatic joint stiffness, heart disease and even diabetes. Apples contain lots of pectin, and pectin lowers cholesterol levels. In recent years, apples are being tested on humans to see if the benefits can be proven medically. Apples are also low in sodium, making them acceptable for individuals with high blood pressure, and they are high in potassium, protecting against strokes.
Can Apples Hurt Your Dog?
Apples are healthy and harmless—with one exception. The seeds can be harmful. They contain cyanide, which is a deadly poison to dogs. Swallowing just a few seeds can cause stomach upset, diarrhea, or constipation in a large dog. A few seeds can be fatal to a smaller dog.If your dog swallows apple seeds, the symptoms are likely to appear several hours later, as cyanine takes a while to be absorbed into the system. If you suspect that your dog has eaten apple seeds, watch him carefully. If he shows any symptoms, take him to the vet immediately. With a smaller dog, I would not wait to see symptoms--err on the side of caution!
