Dog Dental Treats

Dog dental treats that are hard and crunchy, can help keep your dogs teeth clean and free from tartar. Now you can make your own, with this healthy dog treat recipe.

Of course, dental dog treats are not enough, by themselves, to keep your dog’s teeth clean and free from tartar and cavities. But they do help, and giving dog dental treats to your dog will give you a head start on dog dental care.

There is a hitch, though. Your dog needs to chew the dog treats, in order for them to help clean his teeth. If he is a food and treat gulper, they won’t do any good.

But, there’s a way to get around this. If you make larger homemade dog treats, it will slow your dog down.

Even dogs who gulp down their food, will take more time with a treat that is too big for one large gulp. They’ll actually end up chewing it (at least some of it).

This King Charles Cavalier Spaniel eats dog dental treats to clean his teeth.

Homemade Dog Dental Treats

There are two very good reasons to make home-made dog treats for your dog’s dental health. The first is that you know exactly what is in the treats. And the second is that you can save money on treats (and dog dental care) by making your own dog treats.

Made from all natural ingredients, these healthy dog biscuits also contain bone meal for healthy bones and teeth!

These dental dog treats have a light green color (from the spinach powder) and they have a peppermint smell and flavor that your pet will love!

Many of my dog treat recipes are good for your dog’s teeth. However, this recipe is the most beneficial, because it contains some healthy ingredients that nourish healthy teeth.

Ingredients for Dog Dental Treats

  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup unbleached flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • ¼ cup spinach powder
  • 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup oat bran
  • 1 T bone meal powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons non-aluminum baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons dried peppermint leaves

Directions

  1. Mix everything with a mixer in a large bowl, or place everything in your bread maker.
  2. If you are using a bread maker, set it for the dough cycle.
  3. When the dough is mixed, divide it into several equal balls.
  4. Roll the dough to a ¼” thickness.
  5. Use small cookie cutters to cut into shapes. The ones that I use are about 1” across.
  6. Bake at 300 degrees F for 45-60 minutes. Check to make sure that the biscuits don’t get too dark.
  7. Turn off the oven and let them continue to dry overnight or for several hours.

The finished tartar control treats should be very hard and should not move at all when you press your finger into them. Hard treats will help to keep your pet’s teeth clean by removing any built-up tartar from them.

Give your dog hard, crisp dog treats on a regular basis to help clean her teeth and exercise her gums. This simple step will go a long way toward promoting her good dental health.
